Opening of Fishing
Opening of Fishing helps to kick off Spring in Mountain as opening day is the first Saturday of the month. Spur of the Moment Resort is centrally located in Oconto County and one of the favorite places in the nation for fresh lake and river fishing. There are 58 lakes with a variety of Musky, Northern Pike, Walleye, Bass, Trout, Perch, and Pan Fish along with 38 trout streams. Although Spur of the Moment Resort does not sit on the water, it is an easy drive to many lakes and streams in the area. The Chute Pond Recreational Area and Oconto River is within walking distance; with one boat landing 1/2-3/4 mile away. Spur of the Moment Resort offers plenty of parking for boats; a comfortable place to relax at the end of the day; and an atmosphere for family and friends to make plenty of fishing memories to share in the years to come. For more information about the waters of Oconto County, Wisconsin check out the Oconto link http://www.ocontocounty.org/tourism/waters-of-oconto/ .
Opening of the ATV/UTV Season
Spring in Mountain brings the opening of the ATV/UTV season for the year on May 1, it runs through October 31rst each year. Bring your own ATV or UTV right up to your cabin or campsite; hit the ATV trails directly from the ranch. Explore a scenic ride to the Wisconsin-Michigan border, wooded forest trails through the Lakewood and Crivitz areas, and over to the Woodland Trails in Marinette County, Wisconsin, then onto the trails in the Langlade County area.. Once you’ve explored the ATV and UTV trails, don’t miss the play area, a chance to get muddy and dirty, and just have fun. Come back to enjoy a comfortable evening here at Spur of the Moment Resort. Oconto County ATV/UTV maps are available at Spur of the Moment Resort. Out of state riders need to obtain a trail pass, check the link for your convenience http://dnr.wi.gov/permits/trailpass.html .
Don’t have an ATV/UTV, never tried the sport before, here is your chance. You can rent a machine from Mountain Sport and Repair http://www.mountainsportandrepairllc.com/rental-units.html . There phone number is 715-276-1367. I would recommend that you contact them in advance to make sure that they have the unit you wish to rent; get all the information you need prior to your visit. This will make your experience more pleasant.
Springtime also brings back the horseback riders and drivers. The Nicolet National Forest is a beautiful place to explore on horseback. Spur of the Moment Resort is not a trail riding facility, it is a place where people who own their own horses and enjoying horse camping come to ride. Horses are allowed anywhere in the forest, however, there are several favorite trails directly from the ranch that guests enjoy. I do have maps of the area which I am more than happy to explain to you, my goal is to eventually have them on GPS for guests. The Nicolet Recreational Trail is a shared trail, you will encounter ATV’s and UTV’s on this trail. However, that being said the trail is an old railroad bed extending 50 miles to the south; and approximately 30 miles to the north. It is the main thoroughfare for all sports to get to their trails through the woods. Oconto County is very fortunate to have a dedicated recreational officer; and ATV clubs that work very hard to try and make sure that everyone sharing the trails feels safe and comfortable.
Once you leave the main trail, there is a river crossing at the Oconto River; you ride through a beautiful stand of old Pines…truly a favorite with many guests. There is a great Lookout over Chute Pond that is particularly colorful in the fall as the leaves turn. To the south of the resort is one of our best kept secrets, it is a bit challenging to find, but those who find will never forget it. It is a rock bluff that overlooks the landscape for several miles. Those who find it feel as though they have been on a true adventure and have a great sense of pride and satisfaction that just makes them smile. Another favorite place to ride is on the old cross country ski trails around McComb Lake.
There are other trails that you can check out in the area if you are staying for a week or so. These are within an hour trailer ride. They include the Jones Springs Trails; Crocker Hills Trails; Poplar Ridge Trails; and Nine Mile Trail.
A carriage ride is available through the resort. Our big Percheron Black Rose Thorn and husband Skip do rides by appointment in our 6 seat wagonette. This is a very unique way to see a little bit of the area, and you come away with a very special experience about transportation of the past.
There are guests who bring horses and carriages or carts to the ranch to enjoy the forest as well. Many of the trails are accessible by carriage, we have had everything from mini-horses to small and large draft horses visit us here and enjoy the forest on their own in a carriage.
A great way to explore the waterways in Spring in Mountain is by kayak. One of the great spots to explore is putting in at the boat landing off of Kingston Road (about a 1/2 mile from the resort). It is a good mile to the south from the bridge to get to Chute Pond itself. This quiet stretch of lake/river is home to an abundant amount of wildlife. An array of ducks, geese, loons, swans, blue heron, bald eagles, and osprey call it home. There are plenty of lakes and streams to explore. You can rent kayaks in the area through Lakewood Ski and Sport. The phone number for the store is 715-276-3071. Please call ahead if you are planning a weekend and need to rent equipment.
Are you game for something a little more moving and exciting. There are a few places near us that specialize in Whitewater Rafting. Mountain sits between 2 pretty wild rivers, the Peshtigo to the east; and the Wolf to the West. If you would like to whitewater raft the Wolf, check out http://www.shotguneddy.com/Welcome.html . If you would like to experience the Peshtigo River, check out http://www.kosirs.com/ or http://www.wildmanranch.com/adventures-Peshtigo.php .
