Northern Oconto County has always prided itself on being a safe, fun, low-cost outdoor recreational destination for many different user groups, and winter is no exception! Snowmobilers, fat tire bikers, hikers, ice fishing, cross country skiing, down hill skiing, tubing, and ice skating are just some of the ways to enjoy the winter months in the Northwoods. What does the Mountain Area have to offer in the winter months?
Snowmobiling: Spur of the Moment Ranch sits right on the Nicolet State Trail. From here you can ride to Forest, Florence, Marinette, Langlade counties, as well as the UP Michigan! Bring your own snowmobile or you can rent a snowmobile locally from Northwoods Powersport Adventures. They have a location in Lakewood & Crandon! They rent single, as well as 2 up snowmobiles. Cross Country Skiing: We have 3 cross country ski trails in the area for your enjoyment. The McComb Lake Ski trails are the closest right in here in Mountain. The Lakewood Cross Country Ski Trails are right in Lakewood and go through the National Forest & skirt the McCaslin Golf Course. The Machickanee Cross Country Ski Trails located at 6625 Timberline Road in Abrams is another great County Forest to ski through. The Machickanee hosts a candle light ski opportunity the evening of January 7! If you do not own skis, Lakewood Ski & Sport in Lakewood, WI rents them! $35.00/day is quite a deal! Paul Bunyan Ski Hill: Known as the biggest little ski hill in the Midwest, Paul Bunyan offers a great opportunity for families to learn to ski & enjoy the day outside! Located right in Lakewood, WI the ski hill offers a great starter hill with opportunity to advance to some bigger, more challenging runs. Ice Skating: Riverview Town Hall has a great ice rink for families who love to ice skate or for families who just wish to give it a try. They have all the equipment out there to help you feel safe & get going, everything from walkers for keeping yourself up to sticks & equipment for hockey. The great thing about Riverview Skating rink is they have ice skates for you to borrow right in their warming house! Please be kind and put them away for the next family because its all free!
Snowshoeing and Hiking: There are plenty of places close to the Ranch to test out a pair of snowshoes! Whoo Who, you can rent snowshoes right here in the Camp Store at Spur of the Moment Ranch!
Ice Fishing: There are great places in the Mountain & surrounding area for ice fishing. Don’t have the gear? Mountain Hardware & the local gas stations can get you all set up with everything from the license to the gear, just stop in and ask!
Shopping: There are great places in the Mountain & Lakewood for some fun shopping opportunities. Be sure to check out the local Sweet Memories Candy Store for all your sweet tooth needs, Northern Perks for a great cup of coffee, & Lakewood Ski & Sport if you need a hat, gloves, or jacket for all those outdoor winter activities. Many times you can stop in and visit with Joan White in her studio as she works on her natural artwork pieces, always a joy!
Just Relaxing: If you don’t want to brave the cold, enjoy the fireplaces, a good book, a game, and cup of hot chocolate right in the cabin!
